We had to
say farewell to the McCluskey’s and Robertson’s this morning. Lily was so excited about seeing a particular
movie at school that she ran off with out saying good-bye. We ended up popping into her school on the
way to the ferry! So now it is just the Three Muskateers.
A long day
of travel today, although only a couple of short flights. We caught the 9.50 am ferry from Salt Spring
then taxi to Victoria Airport. We arrived to find the check-in counter only
opens 1hr 45min before departure :-( . A 35 min flight to Seattle leaving at 1.45pm; 3 ½ hr
flight to Anchorage arriving at 6.45 pm. The views from the plane coming in were spectacular - so much so that the plane had to land twice (there was a plane on the runway!) Picked up the Hertz car (the only car rental company that does a one way
drop off in Seward) and we were on our way. The drive down Turnagain Arm is wonderful - the road hugs the valley with snow capped mountains surrounding you. We didn't really stop on our way to Girdwood - James was getting hungry and wanted to get to the Hotel. The Alyeska resort is lovely - our room is on the top floor with a view to a mountain but a little cramped having to squeeze in the pullout for James.
The resort is a typical small ski town, the runs are mostly black and double black diamond runs which gives you an idea of the terrain.
I have been
planning this trip for over a year now.
I had a couple of must-dos on my
list and I knew they would fill up fast.
We have been restricted to school holiday dates so I chose a cruise that
would fit in with that. I want to see
bears and knowing that small planes are often cancelled or delayed I chose a
couple of excursions to cater for this. Also
dogsledding on a glacier had to be on the agenda – I have booked this as a
first stop so that, should it be cancelled, we can reschedule. Andrew liked the idea of kayaking amongst
icebergs and James just liked the idea of a cruise! So now it all begins....
