Hubbard Glacier

Later in the afternoon we will be cruising past Hubbard Glacier in Disenchantment Bay  so the morning was up to us.  Breakfast in the buffet – the usual suspects but pre toasted bagels and French toast – not good.  Tomorrow we might try somewhere else.

James wanted to go to the gym with me so we made it by 9am – it was very busy so he went back to the room.  I did manage to get in 45 mins so feeling very virtuous (trouble is everything is in pounds and miles so an intellectual workout as well).

Feeling a bit disconnected, as I haven’t had Internet for 2 days – I have been so used to researching where we are going/doing that I am at a bit of a loss.

Had a good wander around the ship and an aborted attempt to go to the movies (Insurgent – we have already seen it and it is a bit slow at the beginning).  Meanwhile Andrew was at the gym and we will all join up for lunch.

More views of the ship

Andrews favourite coffee shop

Lunch was chaos! People everywhere (we are not people people) but I had a lovely roast beef roll and Asian noodle salad whilst James and Andrew had specialty hot dogs, finished off with ice cream.

The views have been mainly of the ocean passing, but as we came into  Yakatat Bay, the snow covered mountains emerged.  Outside when the ship is moving, it is fairly windy and cool but having a balcony room means we can pop back inside very easily to warm up.  As it slowed down, the sun came out and it was very pleasant.  Andrew has been devising ways of getting the GoPro to mount to the balcony for some time-lapse video.  We could be in for a long holiday video!

Hard to get 7 miles into one panorama shot

The view from our balcony looking backwards

The colour of the blue ice is incredible

The crew went to pick up some ice for a carving for the formal dinner

Coming into the glacier the temperature dropped.  We had found a great spot by going past the gym and down the stairs to a quiet area that only a few people seemed to know about.  My thick fleece was enough to protect me from the wind (over a long sleeved t shirt).  Hubbard Glacier is magnificent – at 7 miles long at its toe it is the largest glacier in….( the audio cut out at that point).

We saw several carvings and even managed to capture them on camera.

The evening dinner in Cascades was formal - we did not pack formal clothes so we booked into Izumi for some yummy Japanese.  Very satisfied tummies all round.  the restaurant is very quiet on Americal cruises but when the ship goes to Australia it gets very busy.  The sashimi was very nice with a variety of fish and beef cooked on hot rocks also delicious.
