Juneau

We woke up as the ship was cruising into Juneau harbour.  The sun was shining and forecast was for clear skies and 22 degrees.  This is apparently unusual.   We went down to the Cascades dining room for breakfast – figuring the food would be better for breakfast but we were not that impressed.  Firstly they believe in communal tables at breakfast ( also at dinner but you can request to be by yourself then) which, to those of us who are non communicators at breakfast, is a hard task.  Luckily the two other families were also happy to keep to themselves so no need for false small talk.  The cereal came in packets and the French toast was chewy – need I say more.

We docked right in the center of Juneau so it was easy to get around.  We had hired a car for the day for a total of $60 – booked last year – good value considering just the shuttle to Mendenhall Glacier is $20pp.  The driving is easy as there are no roads that lead out of Juneau.  We visited Mendenhall glacier and Nugget Falls first.  The falls are very impressive.

We travelled further west to Eagle Beach for our lunch.  True to its name there were a few Bald Eagles flying around but no whale or salmon sightings as can sometimes happen here.

A short stroll around the shops – all very touristy – but we bought a few souvenirs.

Back to the ship for our regular ( now) cocktail in the Schooner Bar during trivia time  (we would answer the questions but not actually participate - actually Andrew insisted we leave for the Abba trivia much to my protest!)

Dinner in the main dining room - prawns, smoked salmon and crab with dressing followed by smoked trout pasta - very nice; Andrew had beef and tomato soup and a piece of sirloin cooked beautifully.
